Belle RiveCasino Hotel
A riverside casino hotel

Belle Rive, where the river slows down

Pale stone, green shutters, twenty-seven keys. A gravel terrace under four plane trees, a patisserie counter that opens before the kitchen does, two skiffs tied at the jetty, and on the first floor the Salon Hirondelle — our casino floor, for adults only.

18+The casino salon admits adults aged 18 and over. Photo ID on the stair, every visit.

The house

A toll house that forgot to charge anyone

Three floors of river limestone, a flat gravel apron in front and a stair that was always too grand for the building it serves.

Everything is on the premises Rooms, kitchens, terrace, bassin, jetty and casino salon all sit inside one building and one garden. Nothing here happens online: this website has no games, no bets and no payment page.

Barges used to stop at this bend because they had to. A weir crossed the river a hundred metres downstream and somebody had to be paid before the gates were cranked open, so the toll keeper built himself a solid house with a counting room on the ground floor and a wide stone stair up to the room where the money was weighed. The weir was dismantled long ago. The stair stayed.

Belle Rive opened as a hotel in the 1960s, when a family bought the shell for very little and spent twenty years putting it right. They kept the counting room as the breakfast hall, laid gravel where the barge horses had waited and planted the four plane trees that now shade the terrace from eleven in the morning until the sun drops behind the far bank. The weighing room upstairs became the casino salon, which is why the Salon Hirondelle has a floor strong enough to take a billiard table and windows that reach almost to the ceiling.

The rhythm of a day here is set by the water, not by us. Rowing boats go out early, while the surface is still flat. The patisserie counter opens at a quarter to seven for the people who want coffee standing up. Lunch runs long under the trees. Then at six the casino salon unlocks, the door team sets up at the foot of the stair, and the house turns noisier and more interesting for six hours.

We are a casino hotel and we say so plainly. The casino is one room among many, it is for adults aged 18 and over, and it is entered on foot, in person, after an ID check. There is no version of it on a screen.

Rooms

Twenty-seven keys, four shapes

Every room has shuttered windows, a stone sill deep enough to sit on, linen sheets and a kettle with proper tea in the tin. Floor areas are measured, not rounded up.

Garden side, second floor

Chambre Treille

The vine that gives this room its name grows right across the window, so the light arrives green and the room stays several degrees cooler than the front of the house in July. Writing table, armchair, a shower rather than a bath.

  • Floor area 23 m²
  • Bed Double
  • Guests Up to 2
River front, first floor

Chambre Quai

Two tall windows straight onto the water, with the original green shutters still on their hinges and still working. You hear the jetty creak and, on a good morning, the oars going out. Cast-iron bath in the corner of the room.

  • Floor area 30 m²
  • Bed King
  • Guests Up to 2
Corner suite, first floor

Suite Embarcadère

The corner above the landing stage: a sitting room with a long sofa, a bedroom behind a double door, and a stone balcony wide enough for breakfast for three. It shares a landing with the casino salon, so it is the shortest walk in the house to a roulette table and the longest way from the kitchens.

  • Floor area 54 m²
  • Bed King + daybed
  • Guests Up to 3
Top floor, whole wing

Appartement Pigeonnier

Under the roof beams, where the toll keeper kept his birds. Two bedrooms, a kitchen with a real oven, a bath cut from a single block of stone, and a terrace behind the parapet where nobody can see you eat breakfast in a dressing gown. Low doorways; tall guests should mind the beam on the landing.

  • Floor area 92 m²
  • Bedrooms Two
  • Guests Up to 4

The casino floor at the top of the stone stair

Seven tables, a hundred and forty slot and video machines along the two long walls, and a casino bar in the window bay that looks down on the terrace.

Open daily 18:00 – 02:00 Adults aged 18 and over only, or the higher legal age where local rules require it. Photo identification is checked at the foot of the stair on every visit. Last admission is half an hour before closing.

Responsible gaming

The casino at Belle Rive is a single long room, the old weighing hall, with the swallows that nest under the eaves giving it its name. It is a small casino and we have no plans to make it bigger. Seven tables is enough that you can always find a seat and few enough that the croupiers know the regulars by their first names.

Our casino hosts will teach any game on the floor properly, from scratch, without anybody putting money down. Wednesday evening is set aside for exactly that. If you have never held a chip in your life, that is the evening to come up the stair.

To be completely clear about what this is: Belle Rive runs a land-based casino inside the hotel. You walk in, you show your ID, you play at a physical table or machine, and you leave. This website is a description of that room. It offers no online casino games, takes no bets, holds no accounts and processes no deposits or payments whatsoever.

  • French and English roulette, five wheels
  • Blackjack, two tables
  • Punto banco in the window bay
  • Slot and video machines, 140 of them
  • Casino bar, open with the floor
  • Casino hosts on every shift
  1. Admission begins at 18, or at the higher age where the local minimum is above 18.
  2. Photo identification is checked on the stair every visit, with no exceptions for familiar faces.
  3. Tell a host your time limit or your spending ceiling before you start and the floor team will enforce it for you.
  4. A break of a week, a month or a season can be arranged in confidence at the salon desk.
  5. Belle Rive extends no credit, and there is no cash machine on the casino floor or on the landing.
  6. Photography is not permitted in the salon, out of respect for the people sitting at the tables.

The salon opens at 18:00 and closes at 02:00, seven days a week, all year.

Eat & drink

Two kitchens, a counter and a terrace bar

The river gives us pike and crayfish, the market two villages over gives us everything else. Menus are rewritten on the first Monday of each month.

Dinner · river kitchen

Table de la Treille

Thirty-four covers in the old counting room, under a ceiling of painted beams. Pike quenelles, crayfish when the traps are good, a tart that changes with whatever the orchard sent that week. Six wines by the glass, all from small growers upriver.

19:00 – 22:30
Patisserie & coffee

Comptoir Amandine

A marble counter beside reception, four stools and a queue most mornings. Croissants out of the oven at seven and again at nine, almond financiers, a tall cake that sells out by eleven, and coffee you can carry down to the jetty in a paper cup.

06:45 – 13:30
Aperitif & late drinks

Buvette du Gravier

A zinc bar on wheels, parked on the gravel under the plane trees from spring to October and pushed into the hall when it rains. Vermouth with ice and an olive, river-valley white by the carafe, and a short list of mixed drinks made without alcohol that are not an afterthought.

16:30 – 00:30
Breakfast & lunch

Salle Verte

The green room off the terrace, where breakfast runs until half past ten and nobody is hurried out. From noon it turns into a lunch room: one soup, two plates, salads from the kitchen garden, and bread from the counter next door.

07:00 – 15:30
This week

What happens, and when

The same seven evenings all year, give or take the weather. Residents and visitors are equally welcome; three of them want a table booked.

Monday

Cello on the gravel

One player, one instrument, an hour of Bach and a few things that are not Bach, with the terrace bar open and the traffic of the river going past.

Tuesday

The river table

A single menu for everyone, built around whatever came out of the traps and off the market stall that morning. Twenty-four seats, one long table, booking essential.

Wednesday

First hands in the salon

Casino hosts teach roulette and blackjack at a slow table with practice chips and no stake of any kind. Questions are the point of the evening. Adults 18 and over only, ID checked as usual.

Thursday

Counter workshop

Two hours at the marble counter with the pastry cook, laminating dough badly and then eating the results. Eight places, apron provided, children welcome with an adult.

Friday

Quartet on the stair

Four players on the half-landing, which turns out to be the best acoustic in the building. People listen from the hall, the terrace and the open salon door above.

Saturday

Film on the gravel

A sheet strung between two plane trees and something from the last century projected onto it. Rugs out, drinks from the buvette, finished before the casino salon gets busy.

Sunday

Oars, then a long lunch

A rowing hour from the jetty at eleven for anyone who wants one, then four courses under the trees that no sensible person tries to finish before four o’clock.

In January and February the outdoor evenings move indoors. Reception keeps the current week written on a slate by the desk.

Le Bassin

Cold water, warm stone, no music

An open-air swimming basin on the lower terrace, built where the barge dock used to be, with a cabin at one end and a row of loungers facing the water.

Quiet hours No speakers, no telephone calls and no lane etiquette. Swimming is 07:00 to 21:00 in summer and 08:00 to 19:00 from November, when the basin is heated to 28°C.

The basin is twenty metres long, lined in grey-green tile and fed from the house supply rather than the river, which is colder and much browner than anybody imagines. A low stone wall separates it from the towpath, so you swim with the water at eye level and the far bank behind it. Towels are stacked in the cabin. Nobody will bring you a drink unless you walk up and ask for one, which most guests decide is the point.

Before you come

Arrival

Rooms are ready from three in the afternoon and we ask for them back by eleven. Bags can sit behind reception on either side of a stay. There is parking for nine cars on the gravel and a bicycle rack under the stair; the nearest railway halt is a twenty-minute walk along the towpath and we will come for you if you tell us the train.

Families

Children are welcome in every room, all four eating places, the bassin and the boats. Cots and bed rails are free and the kitchen will cook something plain on request. The Salon Hirondelle is closed to anyone under 18 at every hour it is open, including children accompanied by a parent, and the buvette stops serving under-18s after ten.

Access

A step-free route runs from the gravel through reception to the Salle Verte, the terrace and the lower bassin deck. Two ground-floor rooms are adapted, with wide doors and a level shower. The casino salon is on the first floor and the lift reaches it. The jetty has three steps and no handrail, so ask and someone will give you an arm.

Where we stand on responsible gaming

An evening in the Salon Hirondelle should cost you what you decided it would cost and no more. Our hosts will write down a limit with you, come and find you when an agreed hour is up, or sign a confidential exclusion that we will not shorten however hard you argue. Ask at the salon desk, or write to the casino manager before you arrive.

Questions

What people ask reception

Is this an online casino?

No. Belle Rive is a hotel with a land-based casino floor on its first floor, and this website is a description of that building. There is nothing to play here, no bet can be placed, no account exists and no payment is handled. To gamble at Belle Rive you come to the house, show identification at the foot of the stair and sit down at a physical table or machine.

Who is allowed into the Salon Hirondelle?

Anybody of 18 and above, or the higher legal age where local rules require it. The door team checks a passport, an identity card or a driving licence on every visit, whatever age a visitor looks and however often they have been up the stair before.

Do I have to stay the night to use the casino?

Not at all. The casino salon, all four eating places and most evenings in the week are open to people who are not sleeping here, subject to the age check on the stair and to how full the room is on the night.

Can we bring the children?

Yes, and plenty of guests do. Children sleep in every room type, eat everywhere and swim in the bassin. The one closed door is the casino salon, which never admits anyone under 18, not even holding a parent’s hand.

Will a host really hold me to a limit?

That is the job. Tell any casino host what you intend to spend or how long you intend to stay and they will write it on the sheet behind the desk and act on it. They will also arrange a break of a week or longer, or a signed self-exclusion, and none of it goes into a guest file that follows you around.

Can I book dinner without a room?

Yes. The Table de la Treille, the Salle Verte and the buvette all take outside bookings. The Tuesday river table and the Saturday film need reserving well ahead; the rest usually does not.

Do you take over the whole house for a party?

For up to forty people, yes, and the counting room plus the terrace is the usual arrangement. The casino salon is never part of a private hire, because it keeps its own door rules and its own opening hours. Write to us with dates and numbers.

Enquiries

Write and tell us your dates

Three lines will do it: the nights you want, how many of you are coming, and which room caught your eye. Say if you need a cot, a ground-floor key, a late arrival off the last train, or a plain supper for somebody who will not touch fish. Reception replies by email, nearly always inside the working day.
