Our position
The casino at Belle Rive is one room in a hotel that also has beds, kitchens, a swimming basin and two rowing boats. It exists so that a guest can spend an hour at a roulette wheel after dinner, learn a card game they have always been curious about, or sit at the casino bar and watch other people play. It is not a solution to anybody’s money trouble and we will not pretend otherwise.
Because of that, the people who work on our casino floor are trained to notice the moment an evening stops being enjoyable, and to do something about it. We would rather empty a table than keep a guest at it who should have gone to bed two hours ago.
This website carries no gambling at all. Nothing on these pages can be played, staked or paid for. The casino is a physical room reached by a stone stair, after an identity check, during stated hours.
Strictly adults only
- Admission to the Salon Hirondelle starts at 18, or at the higher age where local rules set the minimum above 18.
- A passport, national identity card or driving licence is inspected at the foot of the stair on every visit, regardless of how old a visitor appears.
- Guests under 18 may sleep in any room, eat in all four of our venues, swim in the bassin and take out a skiff. They may not enter the casino salon, even holding a parent’s hand.
- The door team refuses entry without debate where a document is missing, borrowed, expired or unclear, and a refused visitor cannot be signed in by somebody else.
- The terrace bar stops serving anybody under 18 after 22:00, whether or not an adult is at the table.
What a casino host can arrange for you
- A time limit. Say when you intend to leave and a host will come to the table and tell you that the hour has arrived.
- A spending ceiling. Name a figure before you begin. It goes on the sheet behind the salon desk and the floor team holds the line on it for the rest of the evening.
- A cooling-off period. Ask to be turned away on the stair for a week, a month or the rest of the season, and you will be.
- Self-exclusion. A written and confidential agreement for a fixed term. We do not shorten it on request, however reasonable the request sounds at the time, and that is the whole point of signing one.
- A quiet word. If you would rather somebody simply kept an eye on you, say so. No file is opened and nothing is written down beyond the limit itself.
Belle Rive extends no credit to any guest for any reason. There is no cash machine on the casino floor, on the landing or anywhere inside the building. The casino bar does not run a tab, and a hotel room bill can never be charged with play.
Signs worth taking seriously
- Staying later, or spending more, than you had settled on before you came up the stair.
- Going back to the table to win back what the last session cost you.
- Playing with money that was meant for rent, bills, school or a family holiday.
- Borrowing from friends, selling things or moving money around in order to keep playing.
- Lying about where you were, or how long you stayed, or what it came to.
- Feeling restless or short-tempered on a day when you are not able to play.
- Choosing the salon over sleep, over work, or over the person you arrived with.
Two or three of those landing close to home is reason enough to say something, either to a host here or to one of the three organisations further down this page. Conversations with our staff are not written into any guest file, and the desk will not raise the subject with you on a later visit.
Independent help
These three services are free, confidential and completely independent of Belle Rive Casino Hotel. Not one of them pays us or is paid by us, and none is a partner of the house.
- Gambling Therapy — moderated forums, group sessions and one-to-one chat, available in many languages: gamblingtherapy.org
- Gamblers Anonymous — a fellowship with regular meetings in most countries, around a table or over video: gamblersanonymous.org
- Gam-Anon — built for the people living alongside a gambler rather than for the gambler: gam-anon.org
There is also a card at reception with the nearest national helpline printed on it. Ask and it is handed over, with no questions attached to it.
Staff and training
Nobody takes a shift up here until they have sat through the door-check briefing and the harder one: how to walk over to a table and speak to a guest whose night has gone wrong. Both are repeated every six months. When a croupier or a host decides somebody has finished for the evening, that call stands, and no manager reverses it in front of the room.
